Top 3 Tips for Glowing Skin this Winter

By Violet Jordan’s beauty Editor Lucy Forrester

Whether I’m wearing a little black dress or PJ’s, I feel best about myself when my skin is glowing.

You can fake a ‘healthy glow’ with lotions and potions containing shimmers and colour pigments.

But a true glow is best found from within.

It helps to get lots of sleep (hence the term beauty sleep), eating well and finding time to relax.

But sometimes life gets in the way and we don’t sleep well, or we can't find the time for that much needed me time.

The good news is, skincare products are not all you need to create healthy skin.

It’s something you can create yourself, totally free!

Here are a few tips for amazing skin this winter.

  1. Drink!

Sadly no, I’m not talking a G&T!

Did you know that to 60% of the human body is water?

64% of skin is water! Amazing. Without water, the lack of hydration results in your skin being dry, tight, and flaky.

This is especially important in winter as most of us overheat our houses with central heating which reduces humidity and leaves our skin dehydrated and dry.

I try to sip water throughout the day. As soon as you feel thirsty, your body is already in dehydration mode.

Being dehydrated shows in your face!

My top tip for an instant radiant glow is to drink a 500ml bottle of water or a big mug of my favourite herbal tea.

It's important that you are getting at least 1.2 litres of fluids a day. Coffee doesn't count (it's a diuretic), but tea is great.

  1. Exercise

Exercise is amazing for your skin.

We must make time for it even in winter when it can be the last thing, we feel like doing.

Getting that blood pumping is the best way to get an instant glow. Even if you are busy (or just hate the cold) as little as 10 minutes intense exercise will kick start your circulation and bring much needed moisture to your face.

On days that I don’t get enough sleep I make the time for exercise. It makes you feel great and kick starts your system to get rid of that tired, grey-skin look.

A great way to get that blood pumping is to take a brisk morning walk. This sets you up for the day and is great for a positive mindset for the day ahead.

When the weather is unkind, my top tip for getting the blood pumping in the house is to reach for the hoover!

Energetically hoovering is a double whammy- it gets the circulation going and tackles the chores at the same time.

  1. Be kind to your skin

When the air outside is cold and dry, the water in your skin evaporates more quickly; this makes your skin feel dry and tight, and makes it look flaky.

Some products such as facial soaps, can exasperate winter dryness by stripping away your skin’s natural oils, and leaving it looking dull.

They remove good oils as well as dirt and sebum.  This causes the breakdown of the skin's natural moisture barrier which resulting in dry skin.

My top tip to combat winter dryness is to avoid soap at all costs! Use a gentle fragrance-free cream cleanser instead to protect your skins natural oils like our Collagen Cleaner.
