5 Ingredients to Look for in Skincare Products

5 Ingredients to Look for in Skincare Products

Some of the best ingredients for mature skin:

1. Sodium Hydroxide (pH Adjuster)

Sodium Hydroxide

What is Sodium Hydroxide?

Sodium hydroxide, also known as lye or caustic soda, is a highly alkaline substance. Its chemical formula is NaOH, wherein Na stands for sodium and OH stands for hydroxide ions. Sodium hydroxide is a white, odourless, and highly caustic solid at room temperature.

Benefits of Sodium Hydroxide

Ph Balance: In skincare and cosmetics, sodium hydroxide is used in controlled quantities to adjust the pH levels of products. pH is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a substance and sodium hydroxide is at 14 on the pH scale, which ranges from 0 (very acidic) to 14 (alkaline, or very basic). This natural level of acidity keeps moisture in and helps protect your skin from environmental pollutants and shields your skin from ultraviolet (UV) damage.

Exfoliation: Helps in the removal of dead skin cells, promoting a smoother skin surface. The light exfoliation helps balance the skin's natural oils and contributes to sebum control, as well as natural skin renewal for a more youthful complexion.

Reduced Irritation: With a well-balanced pH there is a reduced risk of skin irritation/disruption to the skin's protective acid mantle, contributing to the product being suitable for sensitive skin.

Ingredient Stability: Sodium hydroxide can be used to adjust the pH and gain optimal performance from a product and maintain ingredient stability and efficacy, as well as extend its shelf life and prevent spoilage or degradation of the formula.

2. Butyrospermum parkii (Shea Butter)

Shea Butter

What is Butyrospermum parkii?

Butyrospermum Parkii is more commonly known as Shea Butter, or Karite. It is a nut butter derived from the Shea Nut Tree (Butyrospermum Parkii). The seeds of shea trees contain oily kernels which are ground up into a powder and boiled in water till the butter rises and becomes solid.

In tropical climates found in East and West Africa, where the Shea Nut Tree grows, it is known as “Woman’s Gold” which is very fitting for the industry is focused on  empowering women, their families, and their communities.

Benefits:

Vitamin Rich: Shea butter has antioxidant vitamins and vitamins A, E, and F, all of which promote healthier-looking skin. The high concentration of fatty acids reduces the appearance of wrinkles and promotes cell renewal.

Anti-Inflammatory: Being in its pure form it is believed to treat general cases of skin inflammation such as sunburns, cuts, rashes, and more.

Collagen Production: Vitamin A and Vitamin E, helps skin stay supple, soft, and radiant and  helps stimulate the production of collagen within the skin and restores the elasticity of the skin. The rich tree-nut oils soaks into your skin, creating a smooth and soft barrier that seals in moisture.

3. Vegetable Glycerin

 Vegetable Glycerin

What is vegetable glycerin?

Vegetable glycerin is a variant made by heating triglyceride-rich vegetable fats, such as palm, soy and coconut oils, under pressure or together with a strong alkali, such as lye. Once the glycerin splits away from the fatty acids and mixes together with water, forming an odourless, sweet-tasting, syrup-like liquid.

It is said to have been accidentally discovered by heating a mixture of olive oil and lead monoxide. It became economically and industrially significant in the late 1800s because it was also used in dynamite.

Benefits:

Hydration: A natural emollient that draws moisture into the skin and helps to retain the moisture, thereby softening, smoothing, and soothing the complexion. As well as regulating oil production it eliminates congestion in the pores and helps maintain elasticity.

Healing: Due to its ability to encourage normal skin cell maturation, it locks in moisture, creates a protective barrier on the skin against environmental contaminants and pollutants, and helps suppress the urge to scratch any irritation.

 4. Sodium Hyaluronate (Hyaluronic Acid)

Hyaluronic Acid

What is Sodium Hyaluronate?

Sodium hyaluronate, derived from hyaluronic acid (HA) that is naturally present in the body’s skin and joint fluid as a moisturising and lubricating agent. Sodium hyaluronate has a lower molecular weight than hyaluronic acid. The molecules are small enough to penetrate the top layer of the skin and improve hydration from the underlying skin layers.

Benefits:

Moisturise: Its low molecular weight enables it to attract and retain moisture in skin cells, therefore improving elasticity within the skin and diminishing the visibility of fine lines and creases. Due to it not being oil-based, it can hydrate oily and acne-prone skin without blocking pores or causing greasiness.

Anti-inflammatory: Low molecular weight HA promotes the production of beta-defensin 2 (DEFβ2,) that promotes tissue healing and controls the activity of inflammatory cells. This could assist with reducing symptoms of conditions like rosacea and seborrheic dermatitis. The increased hydration strengthens the skin barrier and makes it more resilient to inflammation.

5. Prunus armeniaca (Apricot)
Apricot in water

What is Prunus armeniaca?

Prunus armeniaca is a plant oil pressed from the kernels of apricots. Primarily composed of fatty acids and vitamins A, C, and E that helps improve skin’s ceramides, which play a vital role in maintaining skin’s barrier.

Benefits

Intensely moisturising: Apricot oil is rich in both linoleic acid (omega-6) and oleic acid (omega-9), two naturally occurring fatty acids. These fatty acids work to help keep the skin as moisturised as possible and improve the skin’s complexion and deeply hydrate the skin by preventing water from escaping.

Vitamin A: Natural and sensitive formula that targets combating acne, an uneven skin tone, or conditions such as psoriasis. It helps protect the skin against damage caused by UV radiation, as well as improve the appearance of wrinkles and sagging.

Antioxidant: Due to its high Vitamin E content, it helps to boost circulation and repair scarred and damaged skin, while also fighting damage-causing free radicals. It can help prevent blackheads from forming, because it assists with the oxidation of sebum in the pores.

Strong Skin Barrier: The oleic and linoleic acids in organic apricot kernel oil strengthens the skin barrier. As a carrier oil it can moisturise the skin deeply providing rapid healing by absorbing into the skin quickly without leaving behind any greasy residue. The oil can mimic the natural sebum in the skin and so treats blemish-prone skin with a gentle approach that does not cause imbalance to the sebum production in the skin’s outer layers.
