Skincare is not a cure-all for stopping the hands of time and gravity from leaving their marks, but it can be helpful to address signs of ageing. “The cell-renewal process slows down as we enter our 50s, leaving older, duller cells that stay on the skin’s surface longer,” says Dr. Dendy Engelman, a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist.

Cleanse and Tone

Mature skin should be treated with a mild, non-irritating cleanser that won’t strip the skin of its natural oils, such as a cream cleanser with lukewarm water, which would provide good barrier protection.

To help maintain the pH balance of your skin, use a toner to supply an extra layer of moisture and act as a carrier for the steps that come next. Toners are used to effectively remove impurities and remove dead skin cells without compromising the skin barrier.

Exfoliate

Exfoliation is important, but don't overdo it. As we age, the outer layer of skin becomes thinner and more delicate. To avoid aggravating the skin, exfoliate fewer times to prevent micro-tears. This does not mean not to exfoliate at all; it is vital that we exfoliate as the outer layer of skin is a roof of dead skin, and it thickens as you age, so you need to exfoliate to see more of the fresher skin.

Moisturisers

The decrease of hyaluronic levels leads to fine lines and wrinkles, as hyaluronic acid holds 1,000 times its weight in water and helps replenish and retain your skin cell moisture. Your 50s are the time to load up on skincare products that hydrate and boost collagen. Using moisturising products on your skin such as The Multitasker from Violet Jordan that has hyaluronic acid, will stimulate the production of your own hyaluronic acid, increasing the resilience of your ageing skin.

Sunscreen

Wearing SPF 50 sunscreen every day can help protect skin from UVA and UVB rays, which can damage skin and cause premature ageing. Consistent unprotected UV exposure speeds up the breakdown of collagen and elastin, leaving the skin delicate, dehydrated, inflamed, wrinkled, and prone to age spots. Not all sunscreens are created equal, though. You should choose one with a sun protection factor of at least 30 that blocks UVA and UVB rays.

Some ingredients to look for

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps reduce wrinkles and fine lines by stimulating collagen production. It is also responsible for brightening up a dull complexion and erasing sun spots, as it helps treat and fight against free radical damage that causes oxidative stress and skin ageing. If this is something you are looking to incorporate, try Violet Jordan’s Radiance Boosting Serum

Retinol (used at night) to combat wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and invisible photo-damage. Please note that all retinoids are inherently drying, so while they are great anti-ageing mainstays, they are not for everyone. It’s not the frequency of application, but rather the long-term consistency of use that produces positive results.
Using a serum such as the Overnight Recovery Facial Oil is the perfect addition to your skincare for these concerns

What to do if your skin is dry

  1. Don't use hot water, as this only strips your skin of oils. Instead, use lukewarm water or skip the water and cleanse your skin with a cold cream.
  2. Use a creamy cleanser.
  3. Thick, moisturising creams and oils will help lock moisture in. Always apply at night and in the morning under your make-up. Make use of a lovely rich silky Natural Foot Butter
  4. To keep the rest of your body moisturised, avoid drying soaps in the shower and opt for moisturising body washes instead.

Achieving healthy, glowing skin after 50 is all about choosing the right products, staying consistent, and embracing the beauty of your age. By tailoring your skincare routine to meet the needs of mature skin, you’re not just nourishing your complexion - you’re enhancing your confidence and radiance every day.
